Why Did the Ayoubi Family Withdraw Baking Family Showdown
The BBC's cosy new series The Big Family Cooking Showdown hopes to do for British family cooking what The Great British Bake Off did for blistering, and the similarities between the ii are uncanny.
Just hosts Zoe Ball and Nadiya Hussain seem convinced it's even better than the evidence that was pulling in 14 1000000 viewers when C4 poached it from BBC1 last twelvemonth. Then is this the new Bake Off?

"The new Bake Off is the new Bake Off – this show is all about family. It's such a unique affair," smiles Zoe, 46.
"You've got all dissimilar generations, the dynamics of 3 people in a small kitchen and it's fantastic. You've got food influences from all over the world handed down through generations, and from all over Smashing U.k.. It makes brilliant tv."
"It'due south not but baking – information technology's cooking, it's stories, family unit, heritage, all of those things," grins Nadiya, 32, who won Bake Off in 2015.
"This was an absolute yes from the kickoff."
The bear witness sees 16 families competing against each other by cooking both in their own homes and in the Cooking Showdown studio for the judges, Italian chef Giorgio Locatelli and cook Rosemary Shrager.
If Giorgio and Rosemary, by comparison, are the Paul and Mary of the serial, and then are Nadiya and Zoe the new Mel and Sue?

"We look around the kitchens together at what the families are doing, we'll talk betwixt u.s.a. about what could get wrong and what nosotros would do, and it's worked so well," smiles Nadiya.
"In the Home Visits round I go to one family unit's house, and Zoe goes to the other, and we take families that nosotros're rooting for.
"And Zoe has helped me larn – when hosting in the studio, at that place have been times when I think: 'I'yard not getting this,' then I try something differently. And she's helped me to only just breathe!"
"Like everyone else I'd watched Nadiya win Bake Off and wanted to be her friend!" laughs Zoe. "She'southward inspired me and I've followed her tips in the kitchen – she's fifty-fifty been over to my place to teach me how to cook a korma. I've learnt a lot nearly food from her and we've go groovy friends."
"I tin can now telephone call Rosemary and Giorgio my friends too," beams Nadiya. "They are cooking legends. I grew upwards watching Rosemary."
For judges Giorgio and Rosemary, there's one very big bonus in joining this show: they finally get asked to people's houses for dinner.

"Sometimes friends are nervous to cook for me and will say: 'Ooh, I can't take yous for dinner' – what a stupid, stupid comment," says Rosemary, 66.
"I notice that really abrasive. But going to people'south homes for this show was the best because they are cooking the way they love to cook. Just nosotros're not allowed in their kitchens – we literally have to sit down at the dining room table. It'due south quite humbling really."
"My wife [Plaxy] and I don't become invited to dinner much," admits Giorgio, 54, who runs Locanda Locatelli in London'due south Mayfair.
"Nosotros meet friends on Instagram having dinner left, correct and centre, and nosotros're told: 'Come round later!'
"Plaxy always says to me: 'Y'all never, ever mutter about food,' and that's especially true when I'm non paying for it. When you go to somebody'southward business firm, I'd rather put it in my pocket than leave it on my plate and be asked why I didn't swallow it. If somebody makes the effort to cook for you, you have to accept it."
"But both of us aren't frightened of maxim what we actually experience," insists Rosemary.
"We did mostly agree, although Giorgio enjoyed a Brussels sprout pizza, which I did non like whatsoever. I honey Brussels sprouts, only that was not something to practice on a pizza. I idea: 'Where are your taste buds, Giorgio?!' He did a bit of correcting my Italian besides, and so I did tell him to go away a few times [laughs]."

Thankfully, in that location's been little need for Giorgio and Rosemary to stuff their pockets with the fare served up to them during filming.
In each of the 12 episodes, two families – each with iii team members – get head to caput in three challenges (see box, left).
Both judges admit they've been diddled away by the results.
"What has surprised me is the diversity of the nutrient and what they could do with the £10 Challenge," says Rosemary.
"I was gobsmacked. They had feasts. The Indian families came up with some of the best food I have ever tasted, using recipes that had been handed downward through generations – and that, to me, is very special. I tasted things I'd never had before."
"I was looking at the £10 Challenge and thinking: 'F**k, I can't do this!'" laughs Giorgio, who learnt about food from an early on age watching his grandmother melt and helping out in his uncle's kitchen in northern Italy.
"I was surprised at the standard. One of the things that blew me away was that people could cook nutrient from around the world with such ease.
"If nosotros did this in Italy, some people wouldn't even cook things that are our national dishes. Those from the due south don't drink the wine from the north, the people from the due north don't drink the wine from the south, but hither in the Britain y'all accept this melting pot.
"There was this Italian family on the show – the male parent was Italian, the mum and daughter were British – and they cooked this Thai meal that was the standard of a eatery."
While Rosemary is something of an onetime hand when it comes to judging telly cookery shows, this is new territory for Michelin-starred Giorgio, who has rejected such offers in the past.
"I take been asked very kindly to practise shows similar this and MasterChef, but I institute them boring to watch and would observe information technology more than deadening to do them," says Giorgio.
"A bear witness about family cooking turned me on straight away. And when I constitute out nosotros would be going into people'south houses, that'southward a really large thing.
"I live in a flake of a bubble of Camden Town [with Plaxy and their two children, Margherita and Jack] and Mayfair, with the best produce coming from Italian republic served to me on a silver plate with the best vino.
It's the life of a chef. What we eat at home reflects what we are serving at that time in the restaurant.
If nosotros spend six months choosing the craven we're going to serve to customers, I'm not going to go to the supermarket for 1. This testify is a slice of how Britain cooks now and that's heady for me because I don't get access to that."

Giorgio also needed prompting when it came to identifying the show's presenters – "Plaxy helped me out" – just Rosemary had no such trouble, having taken office in Broil Off 's spin-off prove An Extra Slice when Nadiya won.
"Nadiya actually is a clever girl," explains Rosemary. "I've been in the business for many, many years, but for somebody who has just gone into it, she's a natural. And then you've got the gorgeous Zoe, who is such fun."
Would Rosemary have fancied taking over on Broil Off herself when Mary Berry declined to move to Channel 4 with the show?
"No, I wouldn't!" says Rosemary.
"I wish Bake Off all the luck in the world. I want them to practice well, but for me information technology would have been the wrong move.

"Trying to have someone else's place is not easy, it'due south a poisoned chalice. You accept to be a fleck conscientious.
"Also, I liked Bake Off the mode the BBC did it. It's going to be completely different at present. It has to be different. And I hope information technology's great.
"There are and then many cookery programmes on telly at present, it'due south ridiculous! Only Family Showdown is family orientated – it's about cooking, not blistering, and it's most cooking with families.
"To me, 1 of the nicest things most the show is the human relationship between the families themselves and how that dynamic can change when things go slightly wrong. Who's going to be the boss? Who's the sous chef? Information technology'southward fascinating."
"This is the start of a very interesting and fun show," adds Nadiya. "It's at the baby stages, and information technology will exist lovely to see what people think. I hope viewers enjoy watching it equally much equally nosotros've enjoyed making it."
